Asphalt Cost Per Square Yard: Converting Quotes, Tons, and Thickness

Asphalt cost per square yard is the unit many commercial paving, milling, and municipal quotes use, while homeowners usually think in square feet and plants sell by the ton. If you can move between all three units, you can check any quote against the others and see when a bid is thin on material.

The three conversions you need

  • Square yards ↔ square feet: 1 square yard = 9 square feet. A price per square yard ÷ 9 = price per square foot.
  • Square yards ↔ tons: about 110 pounds per square yard per inch of compacted hot mix (the 110-pound rule). Square yards × inches × 110 ÷ 2,000 = tons.
  • Tons ↔ square yards covered: 2,000 ÷ (110 × inches). At 2 inches, one ton covers about 9.1 square yards. At 3 inches, about 6.1.

More coverage tables are in how many square yards a ton covers. Convert square yards to asphalt tons walks through the formula step by step.

Turning a per-ton price into a per-yard price

If a plant or contractor quotes by the ton, you can work out the material cost per square yard yourself:

Material per square yard ≈ price per ton × (110 × inches ÷ 2,000)

For example, at 2 inches each square yard uses 0.11 tons, so material per square yard is 11% of the per-ton price. That figure covers only the mix. Placement labor, equipment, tack coat, base work, and profit are separate. Get local per-ton numbers from asphalt cost per ton and your own quotes.

Why per-yard quotes need a thickness

A per-square-yard price is meaningless without the compacted thickness behind it. A low per-yard number at 1.5 inches and a higher one at 3 inches are not competing on the same job. Ask every bidder to write the compacted thickness, mix type, and estimated tons on the quote. Then check their yield with the calculator. Checking asphalt yield against tons explains how to confirm after the job that the material actually went down.

Paving, milling, and removal are priced differently

  • Paving per square yard includes mix and placement at a stated thickness.
  • Milling per square yard depends on removal depth, access, and whether you keep the millings. See milling before an overlay and minimum milling depth.
  • Removal per square yard adds trucking and disposal or recycling of the old pavement.

Do your own takeoff in square yards

  1. Measure each rectangle in feet, multiply length × width, and divide by 9.
  2. Add up the areas. Square-yard takeoff from a sketch shows how to handle odd shapes.
  3. Multiply by compacted inches × 110 ÷ 2,000 for tons.
  4. Compare your tons with each bidder’s estimate before comparing prices.

Questions people ask

How do I convert asphalt cost per square yard to per square foot?

Divide by 9, because one square yard is 9 square feet. Going the other way, multiply a per-square-foot price by 9.

How many tons of asphalt are in a square yard?

Roughly 110 pounds per square yard per inch of compacted thickness. At 2 inches that is about 220 pounds, so one ton covers about 9 square yards.

Is a per-square-yard price better than a per-ton price?

Neither is better, they just carry risk differently. Per-yard pricing puts the yield risk on the contractor; per-ton pricing makes you pay for the tons actually placed. Ask for the thickness either way.

Why do milling quotes use square yards?

Milling removes a set depth across an area, so area is the natural unit. Removal depth and how the millings are handled change the price.
