How we estimate asphalt tons

Transparent planning math used by the AsphaltTons.com calculator. Confirm density, truck minimums, and pricing with your plant or contractor before ordering.

Core formula

Tons = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × (Thickness inches ÷ 12) × Density (lb/ft³) ÷ 2000

  1. Convert thickness from inches to feet (÷ 12).
  2. Multiply length × width × thickness (ft) to get cubic feet.
  3. Multiply by compacted mix density in pounds per cubic foot.
  4. Divide by 2,000 to get US short tons.
  5. Apply waste / overage (e.g. 5% → multiply by 1.05).

Default density: 145 lb/ft³

Hot mix asphalt is often planned around roughly 140–150 lb/ft³ compacted. We default to 145 lb/ft³ as a common mid-range planning value. Lighter or denser mixes, compaction, and local specs can shift results — always verify with your supplier.

Waste / overage

Edges, handwork, and waste commonly add 5–10%. The calculator lets you choose 0%, 5% (default), or 10%. Complex shapes may need more contingency.

Cost estimate

Material cost = tons (with waste) × your cost per ton. That is material only — not labor, excavation, base stone, haul, mobilization, or tax. See asphalt cost per ton for planning ranges.
