Why water pools on asphalt

Hot-mix asphalt is nearly impermeable when it is dense and sealed. Water has to leave by surface slope (or a drain you install). Common causes of ponding:

  • Too little pitch. Many residential specs aim near 1–2% grade (about ⅛–¼ inch of fall per foot of run). Flatter than that and shallow dips hold water after every storm.
  • Localized birdbaths. Settlement, thin spots, or roller marks create a dish even when the overall driveway looks tilted.

Start with the cheapest tests that remove water sources before cutting pavement.
