How Many Wheelbarrows in a Yard? Gravel, Dirt, Concrete

How many wheelbarrows in a yard? On paper, a cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so a standard 6 cubic foot wheelbarrow would need about 4.5 full loads. In real life the number is usually much higher, because a level-full barrow of gravel, sand, or wet concrete is far heavier than most people can push safely. For heavy materials, plan on roughly 8 to 16 trips per yard. For light materials like mulch, the paper math holds up and 4 to 5 trips is typical. This guide shows how to figure your own count from the barrow size and what the material weighs.

The volume math: barrow size vs one cubic yard

The size printed on a wheelbarrow is usually the volume of the tray filled level with the rim. Divide 27 by that number to get the fewest loads a yard could possibly take.

Wheelbarrow sizeLevel-full loads per cubic yardFive-gallon buckets per load (approx.)
3 cu ft (small garden barrow)94 to 5
4 cu ftabout 6.756
5 cu ftabout 5.47 to 8
6 cu ft (common contractor size)4.59
8 cu ft (large poly tray)about 3.412

A five-gallon bucket holds about two-thirds of a cubic foot, which is where the bucket column comes from. Heaping a load adds a little volume, but heavy material spills off a heaped barrow on the first bump, so do not count on it for stone or concrete.

The weight math: why real trips run higher

Weight, not volume, sets the limit for anything denser than mulch. A level 6 cubic foot load of crushed stone would weigh over 600 pounds, and the same load of wet concrete close to 900. Few people can control that on a ramp, a lawn, or a slope, and many barrows are not built for it either. A load somewhere around 200 to 300 pounds is a sensible working target for most adults on firm, flat ground, and less is wiser on soft or uneven ground.

To count trips by weight, divide the weight of one cubic yard by the load you are comfortable pushing. The table uses 250 pounds per trip and the same planning weights used across our other guides.

Supplier weights vary with moisture and stone type, so use their number when you have it. Our guides to gravel weight per yard, how much a yard of sand weighs, how much a yard of dirt weighs, and how much a yard of concrete weighs explain where these ranges come from.

How to work out your own number

  1. Find the job volume. Length × width × depth in feet gives cubic feet. Divide by 27 for cubic yards. The base calculator does this for a rectangle, and cubic feet to cubic yards walks through the conversion.
  2. Convert to weight. Multiply the yards by the material’s weight per yard.
  3. Pick a load you can handle. Weigh a test load if you can, or count buckets: a level five-gallon bucket of gravel runs about 65 to 75 pounds, so three or four buckets in the barrow is a good gauge. See how much a 5-gallon bucket of gravel weighs.
  4. Divide. Total weight ÷ pounds per load = trips. Round up, and add a few for spills and cleanup.

Two worked examples

Gravel pad for a shed. A 10 by 10 foot pad, 4 inches deep, is 100 × (4 ÷ 12) ≈ 33 cubic feet, or about 1.23 cubic yards. At roughly 2,800 pounds per yard, that is close to 3,450 pounds of stone. At 250 pounds per trip, plan on about 14 wheelbarrow loads. With a 6 cubic foot barrow filled level, it would be only 6 loads, which shows how far the paper math can be off for stone.

Mulch for a bed. Spreading 3 inches of mulch over 200 square feet takes 50 cubic feet, a little under 2 cubic yards. Mulch is light enough to fill a 6 cubic foot barrow to the top, so about 8 to 9 loads covers it.

Concrete and asphalt by the wheelbarrow

Wet concrete is the heaviest common load, and it sloshes, so partial loads are normal. Two or three cubic feet per trip is plenty for most people. On a pour, the clock matters: count your trips and your helpers before the truck arrives, because a yard at roughly 16 trips can take longer than it sounds over a long or soft route. Our concrete calculator gives the yards, and how many bags of concrete in a yard covers mixing it yourself.

Hot-mix asphalt for patching is moved the same way on small jobs. Plan by weight: at 200 to 250 pounds per trip, a ton of hot mix is roughly 8 to 10 wheelbarrow loads. Work quickly, because the mix needs to be placed and compacted while it is still hot. The asphalt tonnage calculator tells you how many tons a patch needs.

Tips for moving a yard by hand

  • Load over the wheel. Putting the weight forward, toward the wheel, takes strain off your arms and back.
  • Lay planks over soft ground. A narrow tire sinks into lawn and mud. A plank path saves effort and keeps ruts out of the yard.
  • Consider a two-wheel barrow. It is more stable with heavy or sloshing loads, though harder to turn in tight spaces.
  • Check the tire. A soft or flat tire makes every trip harder. A flat-free tire is worth it on a big job.
  • Know when to rent a machine. Past a few yards, a compact loader or a dump-trailer drop close to the work often beats dozens of trips. See how much a skid steer bucket holds.

Questions people ask

How many wheelbarrows are in a cubic yard?

A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so it is 4.5 level loads in a 6 cubic foot wheelbarrow or about 6.75 in a 4 cubic foot one. Heavy materials take more trips because you cannot safely fill the barrow.

How many wheelbarrows of gravel are in a yard?

Usually about 10 to 12. A yard of gravel weighs roughly 2,400 to 3,000 pounds, and most people push around 200 to 300 pounds at a time, which is only part of a full barrow.

How many wheelbarrows of concrete are in a yard?

Plan on around 16 trips. A yard of wet concrete weighs about 4,000 pounds, so loads of two to three cubic feet are normal, especially over soft ground or a long route.

How many wheelbarrows of mulch are in a yard?

About 4 to 5 with a 6 cubic foot barrow. Mulch is light, so you can fill the tray to the rim, and volume rather than weight sets the number of trips.

How much does a full wheelbarrow of gravel weigh?

A level 6 cubic foot load of crushed stone weighs over 600 pounds, which is more than most people should push. That is why gravel is usually moved in partial loads.
