Plant price vs delivered price

A plant (FOB) quote is often the cleanest “per ton” number: you pay for mix at the gate. Delivered pricing adds haul — sometimes as a higher $/ton, sometimes as a separate freight line, sometimes with minimum-load fees if your driveway is a small ticket.

Ask every supplier the same questions: Is this FOB or delivered? Which mix? Any fuel surcharge or wait charge? When does the quote expire? Two plants can both be “right” and still disagree by enough to matter on an 8–15 ton residential load.

What a ton of asphalt usually does not buy

• Paver and roller labor for placement
• Permits, traffic control, or aftercare sealcoat

Small loads still need a truck, a plant window, and often a crew that could have been on a larger job. Minimums, short-load premiums, and long haul distances all nudge the effective price of a ton of asphalt upward compared with a big commercial pour next to the plant.
