Shingle Granules on the Driveway

Roofing granules left after a tear-off act like tiny marbles until they are swept up. They are not the driveway losing its own stone, and they should not be sealcoated in place.

What the grit is

Asphalt shingles are coated with mineral granules that shed during a tear-off, a hailstorm, or a reroof. They wash down the driveway and collect at the garage joint, the low edge, and the gutter. Underfoot they roll. They are usually a different color from the driveway aggregate, and they sit loose on top instead of being pulled from the mat. If your driveway is truly raveling, you will see pitting in the pavement itself, not just a dusting that sweeps clean. Do not diagnose a failed driveway from roofing grit alone. Also separate the grit from nails. A broom does not pick up nails. You still need a magnet. Sealcoating over the granules makes a sandy, weak film that wears off in the tire paths.

Sweeping it up completely

Sweep or vacuum the dry grit into bags. A light rinse after sweeping is fine. A hard pressure wash that drives granules and also strips asphalt texture is not. Check the grass edge, because grit left in a windrow holds moisture against the pavement and can be kicked back onto the drive. If a loader or a dumpster crushed granules into a fresh sealcoat, that coating may need a touch-up after a full sweep, once the film has cured or been repaired as the sealer maker suggests. Do not add a thick second coat on top of embedded grit to hide it. Thickness of sealer is not structure, and a heavy film peels. There is no asphalt tonnage in a cleanup. A measuring wheel will not distinguish roofing grit from raveling. Get close and see whether the stones are loose on the surface or missing from the mat.

If the driveway really is raveling too

Raveling means the pavement's own aggregate is leaving and the surface looks open and gray even after the roofing grit is gone. That condition can mean the surface is aged, the mix was segregated, or the mat is thin. A maintenance sealcoat can slow cosmetic weathering only when the pavement is still tight and sound. It will not rebuild an open, stony surface that is already losing its structure, and it will not fix a bad base. If you need a new surface, estimate tons by area and thickness at AsphaltTons.com, confirm a planning density around 140 to 150 pounds per cubic foot with the plant, and accept the price quoted that day. Sweep the roofing grit first so the new work is not paved or sealed on a layer of marbles. Ask the roofers to leave the driveway swept and magnet-clean as part of their finish, and check it before the next rain binds the grit into the texture.

A practical sequence

  1. Sweep dry shingle granules into bags, including the edges and the garage joint.
  2. Magnet-sweep for nails as a separate pass.
  3. Judge raveling only after the loose roofing grit is gone.
  4. Sealcoat or pave only a surface that is clean, not a layer of loose granules.

The mistake to skip

Sealcoating over a layer of loose shingle grit left from the tear-off.

Questions people ask

Do granules mean my roof is failing?

A tear-off produces a lot of grit by nature. Ongoing heavy shedding from a roof that is staying in place is a roofing question, separate from the driveway cleanup.

Can I reuse the granules as sand in sealer?

No. Roofing granules are not a measured anti-skid addition, and dirty grit in a pail of sealer makes a poor film.
