Tiger Stripes in Driveway Sealer

Tiger stripes are light and dark bands from uneven sealer application. They are cosmetic if the film is thin and bonded, and they get worse if you bury them under a heavy coat.

What causes the bands

A squeegee or brush that runs dry, a worn blade, a hot surface that sets too fast, or a coat applied in overlapping passes with different thickness will dry as stripes. Spray application can stripe when the pattern is uneven or the wind pushes the fan. The bands often follow the direction of the work. They are more obvious in low evening light. They are not tire tracks, which show tread, and they are not segregation in the asphalt, which is a paving texture under the film. If the stripes are only color and the surface is uniformly tight, the driveway's structure is unchanged. Sealcoat did not add thickness where it looks darker in any meaningful structural way. A darker band that is also a ridge you can feel was applied too heavily and may crack first.

What to do about them

Do not try to brush a wet stripe out after it has skinned. You will tear it. Let the coat cure. A thin, even second coat, applied the way the label allows, can hide color bands if the first coat is sound. It will also hide them only if the second coat is more uniform than the first. The same bad technique repeats the pattern. Work consistent passes, keep a wet edge, and do not stretch the last of the pail into a dry swipe. If a stripe is a thick ridge, scraping the ridge before any recoat may be wiser than coating over a hump that tires will polish and crack. Do not fill stripes with crack filler. There is no crack. Do not overlay the driveway with hot mix because of color bands. If you are paving for a real reason, use AsphaltTons.com and the plant's quote. A measuring wheel will not diagnose a squeegee mark.

Preventing stripes on the next application

Mix the sealer so the solids are not sitting in the bottom of the pail, which is a separate cause of light, dusty passes. Follow the coverage rate instead of stretching one pail across a double-sized area. Replace a nicked squeegee blade. Avoid direct sun on a mix that skins before you can blend the pass. Coat the edges and then the field in a pattern you can keep wet. Temperature and shade still control cure, so a stripe is not an excuse to open the drive early. When the repair coat has cured evenly, the old bands should be hard to find. If they telegraph through every coat, you may be looking at thickness differences you keep copying, and a careful thin coat beats a third heavy one. Buildup peels. Cosmetic stripes on a sound film are allowed to be minor.

A practical sequence

  1. Confirm the bands follow the application direction and are not tread marks.
  2. Let the film cure before you try to hide it.
  3. Apply a thin, even additional coat only if the label allows and the first coat is sound.
  4. Fix the tool, the mix, and the wet edge so the next pass does not repeat the stripe.

The mistake to skip

Stretching the last gallons in dry swipes and then adding a thick coat over the stripes the same day.

Questions people ask

Will the stripes wear off?

Light color differences often become less obvious with traffic and weathering. Ridges of excess sealer are more likely to crack than to fade.

Did the asphalt fail in stripes?

Usually no. Striping from application is in the film. Open, rocky stripes that were there before sealing are in the pavement and need a paving judgment.
