Why Topsoil Cannot Stay Under a New Driveway

Topsoil holds water and compresses under tires. It has to come out of the driveway footprint and be replaced with compacted aggregate before any asphalt is placed.

What topsoil does under a load

Topsoil is valued in a garden because it is full of organic matter and it holds moisture. Under asphalt those are failures. Organics compress as they break down, the surface settles, and cracks follow the settlement. Moisture turns the layer into a smear that pumps through cracks when cars pass. A black driveway laid on lawn, with the sod stripped or not, is a thin roof on a sponge. Grass that grew back through it is a clue, not the main problem. Sealcoat will not harden the soil, and cold patch will not build a base. If you can push a rod into the 'base' by hand beside the edge, you are still in topsoil or loose fill. That material should be excavated from the paved area down to firmer ground, then replaced.

Replacing it with stone you can compact

Crushed stone for a driveway base is ordered in tons, not by the look of one truck. A planning figure many quarries accept for compacted crushed stone is about 1.4 tons per cubic yard. Cubic yards are length times width times depth in feet, divided by 27. Confirm the factor and the product with the quarry, because screenings, open stone, and recycled products do not all weigh the same. Example: a 12 by 40 foot drive with 6 inches of stone is 12 times 40 times 0.5, divided by 27, which is about 8.9 cubic yards, times 1.4, or roughly 12 to 13 tons as a planning start. AsphaltTons.com is for the asphalt layer after that base exists. The quarry's quote that day is the stone price. Compact the stone in lifts. A single 8-inch loose dump will not densify from the top.

Where the excavated soil should go

Do not spread the stripped topsoil against the new asphalt edge in a berm that traps water on the pavement. It can return to the garden or a fill area that is not a drainage path. Do not use it as the surface of the driveway 'just for this year' under millings or asphalt. If the driveway crosses a low, wet lawn, stripping topsoil is only the first step. You may also need a thicker stone section or a geotextile, decided with someone who can see the soil. Organic smell, roots, and a dark color are warnings to keep digging until the material changes. Paving day is too late to discover the sod layer. The asphalt tonnage you calculated assumes the stone is already at grade.

A practical sequence

  1. Strip topsoil and organic fill from the entire paved footprint.
  2. Order crushed stone by tons using a cubic-yard estimate confirmed with the quarry.
  3. Compact the stone in lifts up to the planned grade.
  4. Keep stripped soil from being piled where it traps water on the new edge.

The mistake to skip

Paving asphalt directly on lawn soil after a quick pass with a rake.

Questions people ask

Is a few inches of gravel on top of grass enough?

No. Grass and topsoil left underneath still compress and hold water. Remove them first.

Can fabric replace removing topsoil?

Fabric is not a substitute for excavation of soft organic soil. It can separate stone from a firmer subgrade after the topsoil is gone.
