Water Absorption of Aggregate: Test, Formula and Limits

The water absorption of aggregate is a simple number with big effects. Every crushed stone has tiny pores open to its surface. Soak it and those pores fill with water; mix it hot with asphalt and some of them fill with binder instead. The absorption test measures how much water the stone takes in, which tells a lab how porous it is, how much binder it may steal from a mix and how much water to allow for in concrete.

Quick facts

  • Standards: ASTM C127 / AASHTO T 85 (coarse), ASTM C128 / AASHTO T 84 (fine), IS 2386 (Part 3) in India.
  • Soak time: about 24 hours (24 ± 4 h in ASTM C127).
  • Key condition: saturated surface-dry (SSD).
  • Result: percent of oven-dry weight.
  • Common asphalt limit in India: 2% maximum for bituminous work.

The three moisture states

  • Oven-dry: all water driven out at about 110 degrees C.
  • Saturated surface-dry (SSD): pores full, outside dry. This is the reference point for absorption.
  • Wet: pores full plus a film of free water on the surface. Stockpiles after rain are usually here.

Test steps for coarse aggregate

  1. Prepare. Reject material passing the 4.75 mm sieve, wash off dust, and dry the stone to constant weight.
  2. Soak it in water at room temperature for about a day.
  3. Bring to SSD. Roll the stone in a large absorbent cloth until the visible water film is gone, wiping large pieces one by one. Work quickly so the pores do not start to dry.
  4. Weigh the SSD sample (B). For specific gravity, also weigh it in water in a wire basket (C).
  5. Dry the sample in the oven to constant weight, cool and weigh again (A).

Fine aggregate uses a different SSD check: a small cone is filled with damp sand, tamped lightly and lifted. When the sand just slumps, it has reached SSD.

The formula

Absorption % = [(B − A) ÷ A] × 100

The same weighings give the specific gravities used in mix design: bulk (oven-dry) = A ÷ (B − C), bulk SSD = B ÷ (B − C), and apparent = A ÷ (A − C).

Worked example (made-up numbers)

  • Oven-dry weight A: 3,000 g
  • SSD weight B: 3,036 g
  • Weight in water C: 1,890 g

Absorption = (3,036 − 3,000) ÷ 3,000 × 100 = 1.2%. Bulk specific gravity = 3,000 ÷ (3,036 − 1,890) = 3,000 ÷ 1,146 ≈ 2.618. This stone would pass a 2% limit.

Why it matters in asphalt

When hot binder meets porous stone, part of it is drawn into the pores. That absorbed binder no longer coats the surface or glues particles together. The binder left on the outside, the effective binder, is what controls durability. A high-absorption aggregate therefore needs a higher total binder content to end up with the same effective film, which costs money. Absorption also links to the volumetric math built on theoretical maximum specific gravity and air voids, so a wrong absorption value throws off the whole design.

Why it matters in concrete and base

In concrete, dry stone pulls mixing water out of the paste, and wet stone adds extra water. Batch plants correct their water for the difference between the stockpile moisture and SSD. In unbound base, highly absorptive stone can hold water through freeze-thaw cycles, which is one reason agencies pair absorption with a soundness test.

What the limits look like

India's road construction manual says aggregates with water absorption above 2% are normally not considered suitable for bituminous work, and the MoRTH table for bituminous concrete lists 2% as the maximum. US state DOTs handle absorption in their own ways, often through mix design and binder content limits rather than one flat number. Always follow the project specification.

Questions people ask

What is water absorption of aggregate?

It is the weight of water a stone takes into its surface-connected pores after soaking, expressed as a percentage of its oven-dry weight. It tells you how porous the stone is.

How is water absorption of aggregate tested?

Coarse aggregate is dried, soaked in water for about 24 hours (24 plus or minus 4 hours in ASTM C127), rolled in a towel to the saturated surface-dry condition and weighed, then dried in an oven and weighed again.

What is the formula?

Absorption % = [(SSD weight - oven-dry weight) / oven-dry weight] x 100.

What is the water absorption limit for asphalt aggregate?

India's road manual says aggregates with water absorption over 2% are normally not considered suitable for bituminous work, and the MoRTH table for bituminous concrete sets 2% as the maximum. Other agencies have their own values, so check the project specification.

Why does absorption matter in asphalt?

Stone that soaks up water also soaks up some binder. Absorbed binder is lost from the film that coats and glues the stone, so a porous aggregate needs more total binder to reach the same effective binder content.

What does saturated surface-dry mean?

It is the state where the pores inside the stone are full of water but the outer surface has no film of water on it. For coarse aggregate it is reached by rolling the soaked stone in a large absorbent cloth until the visible shine is gone.
