If a quote is vague, ask for compacted inches of surface mix (and binder course, if they use two lifts). Also ask what happens at the edges — tapered lips are a common weak spot even when the center measures fine.
Do not confuse asphalt thickness with base thickness. Many residential builds use roughly 4–8 inches of compacted crushed stone under the asphalt, with more stone on soft or clay soils. Industry residential guidance clusters around a few ranges. Local frost, soil, and municipal rules still win — treat these as planning bands, not a warranty:
- Light residential (cars, light pickups): about 2–3 inches compacted asphalt over a sound aggregate base.
- Heavier residential (RV, trailer, frequent deliveries, work trucks): often 3–4 inches, sometimes as two lifts (coarser binder + finer surface).

How thickness changes asphalt tons
Asphalt is sold by the ton. Our planning default uses compacted density of 145 lb/ft³ (a mid-range hot-mix planning value; confirm with your plant). Formula:
Tons = length (ft) × width (ft) × (thickness in inches ÷ 12) × density (lb/ft³) ÷ 2000

Worked example — a 40 × 20 ft driveway (800 ft²), density 145, no waste yet:
- At 2 inches: 40 × 20 × (2 ÷ 12) × 145 ÷ 2000 = 9.67 tons
- At 3 inches: 40 × 20 × (3 ÷ 12) × 145 ÷ 2000 = 14.50 tons
With a 5% waste factor: about 10.15 tons at 2″ and 15.23 tons at 3″. Same footprint; one extra inch of compacted depth adds roughly half again the mix on this example (about 4.8 tons exact, ~5.1 with 5% waste). That is why “just go thicker” is a real material cost decision, not a free upgrade.

Base, drainage, and edges beat “more asphalt”
Extra inches of mix will not save a driveway that ponds water, sits on uncompacted fill, or tapers to nothing at the edge.
