Concrete Driveway Thickness: 4, 5 or 6 Inches?

Concrete driveway thickness usually comes down to what drives on it. Industry guidance commonly treats 4 inches as the minimum for passenger cars and light vehicles, and 5 inches or more for driveways that regularly see heavier trucks, RVs or delivery vehicles. Each extra inch adds about a quarter more concrete than a 4-inch slab, so it is worth deciding before you order.

Common thickness choices

  • 4 inches: typical for driveways used by cars, SUVs and light pickups on a good base.
  • 5 inches: a common step up for heavier pickups, occasional larger vehicles, or softer soils.
  • 6 inches or more: for frequent heavy trucks, RVs, trailers and equipment, or where a contractor or engineer calls for it. Some driveways are thickened only at the edges and the apron, where loads are hardest.

Local codes, HOA rules and city apron details can set a minimum, especially in the right-of-way. Check them; see do you need a permit to pave a driveway.

Thickness is only half the story

  • Base. A compacted, well-drained gravel base under the slab helps it carry load evenly. A thick slab on soft, wet soil can still crack.
  • Control joints. Joints let the slab crack in straight lines where you want it to. A widely used rule of thumb spaces joints, in feet, at about two to three times the slab thickness in inches, so roughly 8 to 12 feet apart for a 4-inch slab. Your contractor may use a tighter pattern.
  • Mix and curing. The concrete strength, air entrainment in freeze-thaw climates, and keeping the slab moist while it cures all matter.
  • Reinforcement. Some contractors use rebar, wire mesh or fibers; practices vary by region and soil.

How this compares with asphalt

Asphalt driveways are thinner, often around 2 to 3 compacted inches over a stone base, but they work differently and need periodic sealing. See asphalt driveway thickness and asphalt vs concrete driveway for the tradeoffs, and asphalt vs concrete driveway cost for pricing.

Protect the new slab

Keep heavy trucks off a new concrete driveway until your contractor says it has gained enough strength, and remember that the delivery truck itself is heavy; a concrete truck on an asphalt driveway explains why crews often pour from the street.

Questions people ask

How thick should a residential concrete driveway be?

Four inches is a common minimum for passenger cars and light vehicles. Five inches or more is typical when heavier trucks, RVs or trailers use the driveway regularly.

Is 4 inches of concrete enough for a driveway?

For cars and light pickups on a solid, well-drained base, 4 inches is widely used. Heavier traffic or soft soil calls for more thickness or thickened edges.

How many yards of concrete for a 20x40 driveway?

About 9.9 cubic yards at 4 inches, 12.3 at 5 inches and 14.8 at 6 inches, before extra for waste.

How far apart should control joints be in a concrete driveway?

A common rule of thumb is two to three times the slab thickness in inches, in feet, so roughly 8 to 12 feet apart for a 4-inch slab.
