Chewing Gum on Asphalt
Gum flattens into black dots that stick to shoes. Freeze or scrape it off, and avoid solvents that soften the pavement around the dot.

On a warm driveway, gum softens and the next shoe or tire prints it wider. It picks up grit and looks like a tar spot. It is a surface nuisance, not a crack and not a sign the binder is bleeding, unless the pavement around it is also shiny and sticky in the sun for unrelated reasons. Sealcoating over gum locks the lump into the film and leaves a bump that wears through. Cold patch is meaningless here. The cleanup is mechanical first. A measuring wheel will not help you find gum. Walk the area in warm light when the spots are tacky and mark them.
Removing it with less damage
Ice in a bag hardens a piece so a plastic scraper can pop it. Work from the edge of the blob toward the center. A careful, brief warming can also make a thick piece let go, but a torch on asphalt can scorch the binder and start a fire in nearby grass. Do not use an iron the way people do on carpet. Heat and pressure drive gum into the texture. If a residue remains, a small amount of a tested adhesive remover on a cloth can lift it. Test first. Do not pour remover into a puddle. Do not use gasoline. After the lump is gone, wash the spot. A shadow may remain in the texture. That shadow is preferable to a solvent-burned circle. If dozens of dots cover a commercial apron, a contractor with the right tools may be more practical than a kitchen scraper, and they should still avoid products that strip asphalt.
Keeping the next piece from becoming a patch
A cleaned driveway can be sealcoated when it is otherwise ready, and the gum has to be gone first so the film is smooth. At a business entry or a school drop-off, a trash can closer than the driveway reduces the next deposit. None of this changes how many tons a paving job needs. If you are overlaying for structural reasons, estimate tons at AsphaltTons.com and confirm the plant's density and the day's price. Do not overlay because of gum. If a harsh remover has softened a small circle, let it dry and see whether the surface firms. If it ravel, square that circle and patch it with hot mix, or cold patch as a temporary hold. Most gum removals never reach that point if you start with ice and a plastic blade.
A practical sequence
- Harden the gum with ice and pop it with a plastic scraper.
- Spot-test any remover, and do not soak the surrounding asphalt.
- Skip torches, irons, and gasoline.
- Sealcoat only after the lumps are gone and the surface is clean.
The mistake to skip
Melting gum into the asphalt with a torch or a hot iron.
Questions people ask
Will gum stains attract more gum?
A sticky residue stays tacky and collects dirt. Remove the lump fully so the spot is not still adhesive.
Does gum mean the asphalt is bleeding?
No. Bleeding is binder coming out of the mix over an area. Gum is a deposit sitting on top, usually in shoe-sized dots.
