Downspouts Washing Out the Driveway Edge

A downspout that dumps at the edge of the asphalt cuts a channel, undermines the base, and cracks the pavement in a line. Extend the leader to a safe outlet before you patch the edge.

What concentrated roof water does

A roof collects a large area of rain and a downspout releases it in one spot. If that spot is the joint between asphalt and soil, the water digs a groove, carries the shoulder away, and then runs under the mat. The asphalt edge loses support and breaks in a scallop that lines up with the splash. You can patch that scallop every year and watch the same bite return after the next storm. The patch is not failing as a product. It is being undermined. Sealcoat on the driveway does not protect the soil under the edge from a waterfall. A splash block can slow the first splash and still overflow in a real rain if the outlet is the pavement edge.

Give the water a path that is not the base

Extend the downspout with solid pipe to a discharge point that the lot can accept: a daylight outlet on a stable slope, a rain garden sized for it, or a drain the local rules allow. Keep the pipe from creating a trip at the walk. Do not outlet into the neighbor's window well or onto their driveway. Do not bury a flexible pipe with no slope so it fills with silt and sends water backward under the asphalt. If you must cross the driveway, a sleeve installed under the base is a project for when the pavement is open, not a saw-cut filled with a thin patch after the pipe is stomped in. At the outlet, a small pad of stone can reduce scour. Ask the quarry for a stone that will stay put, and estimate tons only after you know the volume. A planning figure near 1.4 tons per cubic yard of compacted crushed stone is a start. Confirm it.

Then rebuild the broken edge

After the water is moved, cut back broken asphalt to a vertical face, replace lost base with compacted stone, and patch full depth. A feather of cold patch over the missing corner is temporary. If the edge has dropped for several feet, the repair area may be large enough to estimate hot-mix tons with AsphaltTons.com using length, width, and thickness, at a planning density around 145 pounds per cubic foot, confirmed with the plant. The price is that day's quote. A measuring wheel can measure the damaged length and is not a survey. Watch the same edge in the next hard rain. If it stays supported and dry underneath, the leader extension did its work. If a new groove appears, the outlet is still hitting the pavement and the extension needs another look.

A practical sequence

  1. Find the scallop or groove that lines up with a downspout.
  2. Extend the leader to a lawful outlet that does not discharge under the asphalt.
  3. Rebuild lost base with compacted stone and patch the edge full depth.
  4. Watch the repair in the next heavy rain and adjust the outlet if it still scours.

The mistake to skip

Patching the broken asphalt edge while the downspout still dumps on it.

Questions people ask

Is a splash block enough?

It can break the initial splash on a small roof area. A large roof in a hard rain will overshoot it and still erode the edge.

Can I outlet the downspout onto the middle of the driveway?

You can send water across pavement that is shaped to carry it away, but a concentrated blast in one spot still scours sealer and finds cracks. Spread or pipe it to a real outlet.
