Gravel Walkway: Base, Stone, Edging, and Depth

A gravel walkway is one of the easiest and least expensive paths to build. The basic recipe is to dig out about 4 to 6 inches, lay landscape fabric, add 3 to 4 inches of compacted dense-graded base, install edging, and finish with 1 to 2 inches of top stone such as pea gravel, 3/8-inch crushed stone, or stone dust. A well-built gravel path drains quickly, stays firm, and can be raked fresh whenever it looks worn.

Crushed, angular stone stays in place better than round stone. Stone dust packs firm enough for wheelbarrows and strollers. See stone dust driveway.

Width and layout

Common widths are 3 feet for a garden path and 4 to 5 feet for a main entry walk so two people can pass. Mark curves with a garden hose and paint before digging.

Step-by-step

  1. Excavate 4 to 6 inches, removing sod and roots.
  2. Grade so the path sheds water to one side or slightly crowns.
  3. Compact the soil with a tamper or plate compactor.
  4. Lay fabric with 12-inch overlaps and pins. See landscape fabric under gravel.
  5. Install edging of steel, aluminum, plastic, brick, or stone.
  6. Add base in 2 to 3 inch lifts, compacting each.
  7. Spread top stone 1 to 2 inches and compact lightly.

If you do not have a compactor, see how to compact gravel without a compactor.

Add about 10 to 15 percent for compaction. The asphalt base calculator can help with tonnage.

Edging matters

Without edging, gravel spreads into lawns and beds. Steel or aluminum edging is durable and nearly invisible. Brick or stone borders look formal. Keep edging about 1/2 inch above the finished gravel.

Slopes and steps

Gravel washes out on steep paths. On slopes, use stone dust, add timber or stone steps, or install stabilizing grids that hold gravel in cells.

Maintenance

Rake periodically, top off thin spots every year or two, pull weeds early, and blow leaves off before they break down.

Bottom line

A gravel walkway is built by excavating 4 to 6 inches, laying fabric, compacting 3 to 4 inches of base, installing edging, and adding 1 to 2 inches of top stone. Angular stone or stone dust stays firmer than pea gravel, and edging keeps the path neat.
