Jack Stands Sinking Into an Asphalt Driveway

A jack stand's small cup can creep into warm asphalt and let a raised car shift. Spread the load, work on cool pavement, and do not go under a vehicle that is not securely supported.

Why this is more than a dent

Changing oil or rotating tires on the driveway puts a jack and then jack stands on the asphalt. The contact area is tiny. On a hot day the mix creeps, a stand slowly tilts, and the vehicle can shift. That is a crush hazard, not a pavement blemish. If a stand is sinking, get out from under the vehicle and support it properly before you think about the driveway. Do not 'snug it up' on a softening cup. Work on a cool day, in the shade if the alternative is a sun-baked afternoon, and only on pavement that is firm. Fresh asphalt and fresh sealcoat are the wrong surface. Sealcoat does not add strength, and a soft film makes the cup slick. Cold patch is not a jack pad.

Spreading the stand and the jack

A sound piece of plywood under the jack and under each stand spreads the load if the board itself is flat and does not split. The stand's foot must sit fully on the board, and the board must sit fully on sound asphalt, not on a broken edge or a loose patch. Center the load. A board does not replace a stand, a jack rated for the vehicle, or the vehicle maker's lift points. If the only place to work is a sloped, crumbling drive, do not improvise. Use a shop floor. After the job, look at the surface. A light ring may be cosmetic. A deep, tilted pocket means that spot is too soft for this work next time. Do not fill the pocket with sealer and set the stand in the same hole tomorrow.

Repairing the pavement afterward

If a cup holds water, square it and patch it with hot mix when you can, compacted flush, or use cold patch only as a temporary leveler. Do not leave a hole that the next tire will hit. If stands sink on every summer job, the driveway is soft, thin, or both, and the fix for the pavement is a better section or a different place to work, not a thicker coating. You can estimate a rebuilt work pad's asphalt tons at AsphaltTons.com and confirm the plant's density, often around 140 to 150 pounds per cubic foot, and the price that day. That calculation does not make the pad a substitute for safe vehicle support. A measuring wheel will not tell you whether a stand is plumb. Look at the stand, the ground, and the vehicle, and stop if anything is moving.

A practical sequence

  1. Do not go under a vehicle if a stand is sinking or tilting.
  2. Work on cool, firm pavement with the jack and stands on sound boards.
  3. Use the vehicle's lift points and equipment rated for the car.
  4. Patch water-holding cups later, and do not reuse a soft hole as a stand point.

The mistake to skip

Setting a bare jack stand on hot asphalt and climbing under the car while the cup creeps.

Questions people ask

Is morning asphalt cooler than afternoon asphalt?

Often yes, because the surface heats through the day. If the mat is still soft under your thumb, do not use it as a lift surface.

Can I jack on a fresh sealcoat?

No. The film is slick and tender, and the asphalt beneath may not be the problem you should discover while you are underneath a car.
