When hot patch is the right material

• A defined cut-out with vertical edges and a base you have already fixed or confirmed
• A plant or yard that will sell a small load (pickup, small dump) and you can place it before it cools
• You can compact immediately — plate or roller — not “after lunch”

Crews do this every day: saw-cut, remove failed mix, tack the edges, place hot mix, roll. That is professional patching. Hot patch vs cold patch

Hot mix bonds better to a well-prepped cut when it is compacted at temperature. That is why contractors prefer it for permanent patches. Cold patch and water-activated patch are the DIY default because you can buy a bag, store it, and work on a Saturday without a silo.

Use cold mix when the plant will not sell you a quarter-ton, the hole is small, or you need a temporary hold. Use hot mix when you have a real cut-out and a way to keep the material hot enough to work. Neither product fixes a failed base. How to place a small hot patch

1. Cut clean edges. Square the failed area. Feathered ravel is a leak path.

3. Tack if you have it and know how to use it. Many DIY patches skip tack and then peel at the joint. Crews do not skip it on purpose.
4. Place in lifts if the hole is deep. Do not dump one thick lift and hope the plate reaches the bottom.
5. Compact while hot. A plate compactor for asphalt is enough on a patch you can stand in. Overlap passes. Overfill slightly; the plate will seat it.
