Asphalt Plant Minimum Orders for a Small Driveway
Many plants will not fire a small batch for a few hundred pounds of mix. A minimum order, a short-load policy, and a cooling clock all shape how a homeowner should plan a small repair.

Hot mix is produced in bulk and hauled while it is hot. Switching mixes, heating a silo, and tying up a truck for a tiny ticket may not be worth it to the plant, so they publish a minimum or they add a short-load treatment to the quote. That policy changes by plant and by day. You need to hear it from the dispatcher before you break out a hole. The price is whatever they quote that day, not a number from a neighbor's old invoice. If your patch only needs a fraction of the minimum, ask whether they can schedule you when a truck is already running that mix, or whether a contractor who is paving nearby can fold your tons into a load. Do not invent a lower minimum by showing up with buckets.
Small tons still follow the same math
Compute what you need first. Length times width times thickness in feet times about 145 pounds per cubic foot, divided by 2000, is the planning tons. Density often sits between 140 and 150. Confirm with the plant. AsphaltTons.com will run a small rectangle so you do not confuse square feet with tons. A 10 by 12 foot patch at 2 inches is a little over one ton with that default, which may be under a plant minimum. A measuring wheel can size the patch. It is not a survey. If the minimum is several tons, you either expand the work to a real, prepared area that can use the mix at full thickness, or you use a temporary cold-patch hold until a proper load makes sense. Do not accept the minimum and spread it like butter over the whole driveway.
Cooling and access
A short load loses heat faster than a full truck, especially in a cold truck bed or on a long haul. Ask how they charge and how quickly you must be ready to place it. Have the hole squared, cleaned, and the base compacted before the truck is committed. If the driveway cannot take the truck's weight, plan a meeting point and a way to move mix that does not take so long the material crusts. Leftover minimum mix is still hot mix with a short life. A stranger offering to 'use up a minimum' on your unprepared drive is not a shortcut you should take. Sealcoat and cold patch do not become hot mix when the plant is closed.
A practical sequence
- Calculate the tons the repair actually needs at the thickness you want.
- Ask the plant their minimum, short-load policy, and the price that day.
- Prepare the cut and the base before a small load is dispatched.
- Place any required minimum at full thickness, not as a driveway-wide smear.
The mistake to skip
Spreading a plant-minimum load thin so every square foot turns black.
Questions people ask
Can a contractor buy a smaller amount than I can?
Sometimes, because they are already on the schedule. Ask. It does not change the plant's price quote for that day.
What if the plant is closed for the season?
Use a temporary cold-patch fill if you must cover a hole, and plan hot mix when the plant reopens. Cold patch is not the permanent layer.
