Minimum Temperature for Sealcoating a Driveway

The minimum temperature for sealcoating on most pails is about 50°F, and rising. SealMaster's engineering spec, for example, says the temperature must be at least 50°F and rising, should not be expected to drop below 50°F within 24 hours, and the job should be skipped if rain is forecast within 24 hours (SealMaster spec). Other brands use similar wording, but the label on your product is the rule that counts.

Why temperature matters so much

Most driveway sealers are water-based emulsions. They cure as the water evaporates and the asphalt or polymer particles fuse into a film. Cold slows evaporation, and so do humidity, shade and still air. Sealer that stays wet too long can wash off in a shower, track onto shoes, or cure soft and patchy. If it freezes before it cures, it can be ruined; see driveway sealer froze.

Air temperature versus pavement temperature

Some manufacturers require both the surface and the air to be at least 50°F. Pavement in the shade or early in the morning can be colder than the air, while sunny pavement in the afternoon can be much warmer. An inexpensive infrared thermometer settles the question; aim it at the shadiest part of the driveway, not just the sunny apron.

The 24-hour window

The "and rising" part means you want a warming day with no overnight drop below the minimum. A 55°F afternoon followed by a 38°F night is a poor bet even though the application temperature looked fine. Check the hourly forecast for the full day and the night after.

Other conditions that slow curing

Planning the job by season

In most of the U.S., late spring through early fall gives the most reliable sealcoating weather. In cooler months, start late in the morning once the surface has warmed and dried, finish early enough that the coat skins over before evening, and keep traffic off for at least the time on the label. SealMaster's spec calls for at least 24 hours of cure before opening to traffic. For late-year timing, see sealing a driveway before frost.

What about hot weather?

Very hot pavement can make sealer dry too fast, leaving lap marks. Many crews lightly mist the surface or work early in the day. Check your product's maximum and follow its instructions.

Questions people ask

What is the lowest temperature you can sealcoat a driveway?

Many sealer makers require at least 50°F and rising, with no drop below 50°F for 24 hours afterward. Always follow the label on your product.

Can I sealcoat if it gets cold at night?

It is risky. If the temperature falls below the product's minimum before the sealer cures, it can stay soft, wash off or be damaged by frost.

Does pavement temperature matter or just air temperature?

Both can matter. Some products require the surface and air to meet the minimum. Shaded pavement is often colder than the air in the morning.

How long should sealer cure before driving on it?

Follow the label. One common manufacturer spec calls for at least 24 hours before opening to traffic, and cool or humid weather can take longer.
