For fresh surfaces, PPG suggests a thin first coat of about 5 mils, about a week of cure, and then a regular 15-mil coat.

• PPG: apply only when air and surface are above 50°F and expected to stay there for 24 hours, and allow at least four hours of cure above 50°F and below 80 percent humidity before any moisture.
• Crafco: don't apply below 60°F, above 80 percent relative humidity, or within 24 hours of expected rain.

Crafco's data sheet warns against using its traffic paint on large pedestrian or sloped surfaces like ramps and walkways, and even against painting an entire traffic stall, to avoid slips and falls. Where people may walk, it calls for anti-slip additives. Valspar's directions call for an anti-slip agent at 1 pound per gallon on inclines, stairs, and large painted areas that get foot traffic. Keep lines narrow, and use grit where people walk.

How Much Paint You Need

Measure the total length of your lines. Two parking spaces take three lines. At 18 feet each, that's 54 linear feet of 4-inch stripe. With a paint rated for roughly 300 linear feet per gallon, one gallon covers two coats with room to spare.
