Setting a Post Through an Asphalt Driveway

A post set through asphalt needs a real footing and a patched joint, not a hole poked in the mat and packed with cold patch around the wood.

Why a stabbed hole fails

Driving a bar through asphalt and dropping a post into the crumb leaves a shattered ring. Water runs down the post, the base softens, and the post leans. Wood in contact with a wad of cold patch stays damp and rots. The cold patch, which is only a temporary hole fill, cracks away from the post the first time something bumps it. A gate post, a fence end, or a light post also takes a sideways load, so the footing below the pavement matters more than the collar at the surface. Locate utilities before you core or dig. A measuring wheel can lay out the spacing along the drive. It is not a survey of the property line where a fence must sit. If the post is really a mailbox at the street, the roadside rules are a separate concern from the paving detail.

A cleaner way through the mat

Core or saw a neat opening rather than beating a star of cracks. Dig the footing to the depth the use requires, set the post or a sleeve in concrete or compacted structural fill as the design calls for, and keep that concrete from becoming a wide mound above the driveway. The asphalt should meet a vertical edge around the finished post with a tight joint you can seal after it cures. If you place hot mix around the post, compact it in a ring that is full thickness, not a feather onto the old surface. If hot mix is unavailable, cold patch can close the opening temporarily until you replace it. Do not wrap the post in sealer to 'waterproof' a loose hole. Sealer is not a grout and it does not replace a footing. For a gate, the hinge posts need to be sized for the gate, not for a sign, or the asphalt joint will rip as the post rocks.

After the post is in

Slope the joint so water does not sit against the post. If the opening is large, estimate patch tons with the small-area math at AsphaltTons.com only when you are truly ordering mix by the ton. A planning density near 145 pounds per cubic foot, inside 140 to 150, should be confirmed with the plant, and the price is their quote. Most single posts are a bucket-scale repair, not a truck. Still compact whatever you place. Check the post for plumb after the first week. A lean means the footing is short or the hole was backfilled loose, not that the asphalt stain failed. If you later need to remove the post, cut the collar and patch the opening as a small square. Leaving a buried stub under a skin of mix creates the same rot settlement as a stump. Pull the wood, then close the pavement.

A practical sequence

  1. Locate utilities and core a neat opening instead of smashing a hole.
  2. Set a footing sized for the load, not a wood post in loose patch.
  3. Close the asphalt with a full-thickness vertical joint and keep water off the post.
  4. If you remove the post later, take the buried wood out before you patch.

The mistake to skip

Jamming a wood post into a broken hole and packing cold patch around it as the footing.

Questions people ask

Can I bolt a post to the surface instead?

A surface plate only works if the asphalt and base can take the load and the anchors are meant for that use. A rocking plate makes a bigger hole. Many posts still need a footing.

Will crack filler seal around the post?

It can dress a tight, stable joint. It cannot stop a post that rocks, and it is not a footing.
