Steel Plates Over a Driveway

Steel plates bridge a cut or spread a heavy load. They also slide, gouge edges, and hold heat. The plate has to be thick enough for the load and secured so it does not skate.

When a plate is the right tool

A plate is used to carry traffic over an open trench or to spread a point load that plywood cannot handle. The thickness and the span are an engineering and rental question tied to the vehicle and the opening. Do not copy a plate size from a photo and assume it will carry a concrete truck over a wide hole. Ask the rental yard and, for a public street, the permit office. On a private driveway, you still need a plate rated for the truck you will run, with bearing on sound pavement at each side, not on the crumbling lip of the cut. A plate is not a permanent patch. Under it, the trench still needs compacted backfill and, later, full-depth asphalt. Cold patch crammed under a rocking plate is a temporary hole fill having a bad day.

How plates damage asphalt

The edge of a plate acts like a blade when a wheel hits it at an angle or when the plate sinks on one side. In hot weather the steel heats the mat and a wheel can shove asphalt at the bearing edge. Plates that are not pinned, recessed, or ramped with a temporary wedge can slide. The wedge itself, if it is loose cold patch, tears away and leaves a bump. Ask how the rental plate should be fixed so it does not skate, and do not invent a spike pattern that cracks the pavement. Sweep grit off before the plate goes down. When the plate comes up, look for crescents and crushed areas. Shallow marks may be left alone. Deep gouges that pond need a squared hot-mix patch. Estimate tons for that area at AsphaltTons.com if you are ordering by the ton, confirm a planning density around 140 to 150 pounds per cubic foot with the plant, and pay their quote. A measuring wheel will not tell you the plate's capacity.

After the crossing is done

Remove plates when the permanent backfill and pavement can take the traffic. A forgotten plate becomes a rust stain and a winter skid. If the cut was in the public right of way, the permit may set how fast the plate has to go and what the asphalt patch must be. On your own drive, still replace temporary cover with compacted stone and hot mix at the driveway thickness. Do not pave a thin cap over a plate and leave the steel buried. That is a hidden joint that will telegraph. Sealcoat over a plate scar does not fill a gouge. If you need several crossings during a build, plan one strengthened route rather than dragging plates to a new spot every day. Each drag can scratch the driveway in a long line that no coating will erase.

A practical sequence

  1. Rent a plate rated for the span and the truck, and confirm any street permit.
  2. Bear the plate on sound pavement and secure it the way the supplier requires.
  3. Backfill and compact the cut under it before you call the crossing finished.
  4. Patch gouges with full-depth mix and remove the plate when the repair can carry traffic.

The mistake to skip

Laying an unsecured thin plate over a wide trench and driving a loaded truck across.

Questions people ask

Can I use scrap steel from the yard?

Only if someone qualified says that thickness and span match the load. Random plate is how wheels punch through.

Will plywood under the plate stop scratches?

It can reduce scratching on sound asphalt, but it does not increase the plate's spanning strength over a hole.
