Skid-Steer Tracks on an Asphalt Driveway

A compact track loader can chew asphalt by turning in place, especially with steel tracks, on a hot day, or on a new mat. Protect the surface or stage the machine somewhere else.

Why tracks and asphalt fight

Skid steers turn by scrubbing. Steel tracks act like files. Rubber tracks are kinder and still point-load and twist when the machine pivots with a full bucket. Fresh asphalt and summer-soft asphalt move under that twist, leaving a woven scar and, on a weak base, a rut. The scar is not a stain you can wash. It is displaced mix or broken aggregate. A thin sealcoat will not fill the weave. If the driveway was just paved, ask the paver how long equipment should stay off, and do not treat a rubber-track machine as weightless. Even an older driveway can be marked on a hot afternoon. The safer plan is to unload on the street if that is legal, or on a sacrificial area, and to avoid pivot turns on the mat.

Protection when the machine must cross

Plywood or mats under the travel path can spread the load if the sheets stay put and cover every point that will twist. They will not survive a steel track that is allowed to spin. Make the turns on soil you are willing to repair, not on the driveway. Keep the bucket low and the trips few. Do not use diesel as a lubricant so the tracks slide. Diesel softens asphalt. If you are also having the driveway paved as part of the same project, schedule the loader work before the asphalt, while the stone base is the driving surface, then repair the base before paving. Stone tons for that repair can be estimated from cubic yards at about 1.4 tons per cubic yard, confirmed with the quarry. After paving, the asphalt tons are a separate order through AsphaltTons.com for the thickness you place, confirmed with the plant at that day's price.

If the tracks already left a pattern

Sweep loose aggregate. If the marks are shallow scuffs in sound pavement, they may be cosmetic and can be left, or a later maintenance seal might even the color without rebuilding anything. If the weave is deep, holds water, or shows the base, cut out the damaged area to a vertical edge and patch with hot mix, or rebuild the base where it rutted. Cold patch in a track groove is temporary and will usually pick out. Do not rake the displaced asphalt flat after it has cooled and expect it to bond. A measuring wheel will not measure the scar depth. Use a straightedge. Next time, write machine limits into the site plan: no steel tracks, no pivot turns, and a crossing path you are prepared to redo. The driveway is not the job-site yard unless you built it for that.

A practical sequence

  1. Keep steel tracks and pivot turns off asphalt, especially when it is hot or new.
  2. Cross on mats if you must, and turn on ground you can afford to repair.
  3. Do the heavy loader work before paving when the project allows.
  4. Cut out deep track damage and patch it instead of coating the scar.

The mistake to skip

Spinning a loaded skid steer in place on a warm driveway to turn it around.

Questions people ask

Are rubber tracks safe on any driveway?

They mark less than steel and can still scuff or rut a hot, new, or thin driveway. Cross gently and avoid spinning.

Can I sealcoat over track marks?

A later sealcoat may hide light scuffs on sound pavement. It will not fill deep gouges or fix a rutted base.
