Taping Off the Garage Before Sealcoating
Tape and paper keep driveway sealer off the garage slab, the door, and the siding. Remove the tape before the film cures onto it, or the tape becomes part of the coating.

Sealer that laps onto concrete often dries as a dark stain that is tedious to remove. The garage slab, the threshold, a concrete walk, brick piers, and the bottom of the door are the usual victims. Mask them with painter's tape and paper or plastic that stays put, pressed down so sealer cannot creep underneath. Cover the door face if you will brush near it. A measuring wheel is not part of masking. Take a moment to move the cars out before you tape yourself in. Do not tape only the center of the threshold and leave the corners, because the brush touches the corners first. If the driveway meets a coated garage floor, that coating is also at risk. Mask it. This preparation does not improve the asphalt's structure. It saves you a stain. The driveway itself still needs to be clean, dry, and sound, or you are protecting the garage while coating a failing pavement.
Timing the removal
Pull tape after the edge has set enough not to run, and before the sealer cures into the adhesive. If you wait until the next day, the tape can tear the edge of the film or leave a glue line. Score along the tape with a gentle pull back on itself rather than straight up if the film has started to grab. Do not drive over the taped edge to 'cut' it. Have a plastic scraper and a rag ready for the dot that still gets past the tape. Clean fresh dots promptly. Cured sealer on concrete is a harder project and may never match perfectly. Do not use gasoline to clean the garage slab. Use a method that will not etch the concrete or create a bigger stain. Read the sealer label for cleanup solvents they actually approve.
The joint under the door is not a tape line only
Many driveways have a gap at the garage slab that moves. Tape does not fill that joint. If the joint needs a backer and a flexible sealant, that is a different product from driveway sealer, done so water does not run into the garage. Do not pack the gap with sealer. It will crack and stick to the wrong surfaces. After tape is removed, look at the asphalt edge. A thick ridge of sealer against the tape line is a future peel and a trip. Feather that edge while it is still workable, within the product's instructions, so the film thins out instead of ending in a dam. Keep traffic off the cure. If you later pave an overlay up to the same door, the mask returns, and the overlay thickness has to clear the door. Estimate those tons at AsphaltTons.com and confirm the plant's price. Tape is cheap. A door that will not close because the pavement or the sealer is too high is not.
A practical sequence
- Mask the slab, threshold, door, and nearby masonry before any sealer is opened.
- Press the tape so sealer cannot run underneath.
- Remove the tape after the edge sets and before it locks to the adhesive.
- Clean fresh spots immediately and keep a thick sealer dam off the threshold.
The mistake to skip
Leaving tape in place overnight so it cures into the edge of the sealcoat.
Questions people ask
Can I use duct tape?
Use a tape that releases cleanly. Aggressive tapes can leave adhesive on the garage floor that is its own stain.
What if sealer is already on the concrete?
Lift it while it is fresh. Cured film may need a mechanical or labeled cleaner, and gasoline is not the cleaner to start with.
